監獄 / prison
監獄 (kangoku) is a formal term for “prison” or “jail” in Japanese, referring to a facility where individuals are confined as punishment for crimes. While it’s often used in legal or historical contexts, the more commonly used modern term is 刑務所 (keimusho). 監獄 can also appear in literature or media to evoke a more dramatic or old-fashioned image of imprisonment.
