守破離 / [3 stages of learning and mastery]

守破離 (shuhari) is a traditional Japanese concept describing the three stages of learning and mastery, often associated with martial arts but applied more broadly to crafts, business, and creative work.

守 (shu) – Follow: Learn the fundamentals and faithfully follow the established rules or forms.

破 (ha) – Break: Begin to question and adapt the rules, experimenting beyond the basics.

離 (ri) – Separate: Transcend the rules entirely, creating your own style or approach.

守破離 captures the idea that true mastery comes not from skipping the basics, but from deeply internalizing them before moving beyond them.
