避難 / evacuation (or seeking shelter)
避難 (hinan) means to evacuate or take refuge, especially during emergencies like earthquakes, floods, tsunamis or typhoons. In Japan, where natural disasters are common, 避難 is an important word to know. You’ll often hear terms like 避難所 (hinanjo – evacuation shelter) and 避難指示 (hinan shiji – evacuation order). Knowing when and how to 避難 is an important part of disaster preparedness and public safety.
